Going Independent as a Texas CDL Driver — Complete Checklist
Everything you need before you roll with your first haul on your own.
The Complete Going Independent Checklist
Every step, in the right order — from getting your authority to protecting your income on Day 1.
Get your CDL (Commercial Driver's License)
Class A CDL required to operate most semi-trucks. If you already have one, you're ahead of the game.
Choose your business structure
Most owner-operators go LLC for liability protection and tax flexibility. Consult an accountant before you file.
Register your business with the state
File your LLC or sole proprietorship with the Texas Secretary of State. Get your EIN from the IRS (free, takes 10 minutes online).
Obtain your USDOT number
Required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Register at fmcsa.dot.gov — free to apply.
Apply for your Motor Carrier (MC) number
Required if you're hauling regulated freight across state lines. Also through FMCSA — $300 filing fee.
Set up your ELD (Electronic Logging Device)
Federally mandated for most CDL drivers. Must be FMCSA-certified. Factor this cost into your startup budget.
Get your truck inspected & register commercial plates
Annual DOT inspection required. Register your truck for apportioned plates through IRP if running interstate.
Purchase commercial truck insurance
Primary liability (minimum $750K), cargo, and physical damage coverage. Required before you can activate your authority.
Open a dedicated business bank account
Keep business and personal finances separate from day one. Makes taxes, audits, and bookkeeping dramatically easier.
Set up your IFTA fuel tax account
International Fuel Tax Agreement — required if running in multiple states. Register through the Texas Comptroller's office.
Line up your first load
Use a freight broker or load board (DAT, Truckstop.com) to find your first haul. Expect thin margins early — relationships build over time.
Protect your income — life & disability coverage DON'T SKIP
Your employer coverage disappears on Day 1. As an owner-operator, you are the business — if you can't drive, you can't earn. Set up life and income protection before you roll your first solo haul.
